Serial tells the story of Bowe Bergdahl, a PFC who walked off his base into the Afghan desert, was captured by the Taliban, and held hostage for five years. In this eleven-part series, Sarah Koenig reports on the complicated circumstances behind Bowe’s choice to leave, his capture and imprisonment, and the massive effort to get him back home.
Telling Bowe Bergdahl’s story involved performing extensive research on the circumstances of his capture through Serial and several other news outlets. The challenge was properly conveying Bergdahl’s motives while giving visual language to an audio medium.
